What I Have Learned About Action Research

I have learned that action research is a valuable research method that I may use as a Principal in charge of a school. As I have uncovered the many positive aspects of this type of research I have discovered that action research is reflection and inquiry to improve practice. This research method would allow me as a leader to really examine concerns and/or possible improvement areas within my school, reflect about the importance of change in regard to them, ask questions and conduct research into them so that I may come up with answers and possible solutions for the betterment of my school. I do know that this type of research is crucial for the positive environment that my school needs to succeed in all areas. In traditional research outside sources look for problems and come up with information in a more general way. As a leader it is imperative that I will be able to admit problems, look into them, come up with possible solutions, and implement them. Being a learner is an essential part of this process. As I lead my school I will exhibit my willingness to learn and will be setting an example for my staff that will encourage them to become learners as they guide our youth into the future.

How I Might Use Action Research (Example)

Scenario:
I have noticed that the discipline in my school has become far worse at this point in the school year. Referrals have risen, academic scores have fallen and teachers just appear to be at their wits end with disruptive and volatile students. I then inquire as to what exactly this problem is, why it is happening and how can this issue be solved. I would then conduct an action research study that would allow myself and others to find out possible solutions to cut down on discipline issues and make my school a better place to learn and work in. As principal in this situation I would write my own reflective words and put them down on paper, form a committee with various teachers and specialists, conduct a meeting with all parties, and begin my action research by allowing for a brainstorming and problem solving session. I would offer my reflections, questions, and solutions and together we would research our discipline problem. As this research takes place many answers to questions would be answered and the information would be generated allowing the action research to help us solve many of these discipline problems. Utilizing my staff will be key in this action research as they have many collaborative skills and classroom experience that will take this issue to key places. Empowerment will become vital as each of the committee members takes ownership in our action research and eventually our action plan. By doing so they can model and help me implement the solutions and in the end our school benefits from this positive action research study.
